Professor Brånemark first visited Brazil 1988 and in 1992 together with an international clinical team started reconstruction of secondary clefts and other maxillofacial defects in Bauru at the Hospital of Rehabilitation and Craniofacial Anomalaties (Centrinho). In 1998 collaboration was established with University Sagrado Coração for dental and maxillofacial rehabilitation. Some years ago it was decided to extend the Osseointegration Center in Gothenburg to new geographical locations with challenging clinical applications.
For the above reasons Brazil was suggested as a possible future location. Considering the international locations of the existing Associated Brånemark Osseointegration Centers it was thought, that the previous clinical activities in Bauru did motivate an Institute there for global connections. The present and future capacity of IT should allow for acceptable interaction within time and distance.
The P-I Brånemark Foundation in Gothenburg, Sweden was permitted by the county governmental authority to transfer financial resources for research and clinical building in Brazil, and the City of Bauru did provide a proper place for The Institute.
Dr. Brånemark says that he selected Brazil for establishment of the Institute for three reasons: he believes in the potential of the country; there are competent professionals; and because of the difficult access of Brazilian people to tissue anchored prostheses treatment.
